The Spring Cleanup Event lets West Des Moines residents who receive city trash service set out large household items, on their regular collection day, at no extra cost.Pickup Instructions
- Place items at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your normal collection day.
- Do not set items out earlier than 5:00 p.m. the day before.
- Collection may take a few days, depending on volume.
- Your total pile must be no larger than a pickup truck bed (8 feet in width, 5.5 feet in depth, and 3 feet in height).
- Items must be light enough for two people to lift.
Who Can Participate
- Only residents who receive City of West Des Moines solid waste collection and use the brown garbage cart, are eligible.
- If you live in an apartment, condo, or townhome, or HOA community with private trash service, contact your property manager for details.
Accepted Items
Items must be able to be lifted by two people.
- Couch, recliner, chairs, tables
- Mattress, box spring
- Desk, dresser, doors
- Toys, lamps, fans
- Carpet (Cut into rolls that are 4 feet long and 18 inches wide.)
- Grills, smokers, patio heaters (propane/fuel removed)
- Computer monitors and TVs (must be liftable by one person)
- Old dishes, vacuum cleaners
- Fire pits (propane removed)
Not Accepted
These items cannot be collected during Spring Cleanup:
- Appliances
- Hazardous waste (paint, oil, antifreeze, chemicals)
- Batteries
- Yard waste, logs, limbs, trees
- Construction or demolition debris (wood, fencing, decking, drywall, shingles)
- Concrete, bricks, dirt, sod
- Broken glass
- Railroad ties
- Tires
- Pallets
- Pianos
- Printers
- Dehumidifiers
Note:
Appliances can be taken to the Scrap Appliance & Metal Drop‑off on June 6 at West Des Moines Public Services East (560 S. 16th St.).
How to Know if an Item Is Accepted
Ask yourself two questions:
- Can two people lift it?
- Is the total pile smaller than a pickup truck bed?
If yes to both, it can go to the curb.
