Medication Disposal Program

A green MedReturn drug collection box used for safely depositing unwanted prescription drugs.

Safe disposal of unused medicine protects our water supply and prevents accidental poisoning or drug abuse. Please note that the "MedReturn" drop-off box previously located at the West Des Moines Police Department has been removed.

Where to Dispose of Medications

If you have unused prescription or over-the-counter medications, you can take them to the following authorized drop-off locations in West Des Moines:

  • Hy-Vee: 1990 Grand Avenue
  • Hy-Vee Pharmacy: 555 S. 51st Street
  • Hy-Vee Pharmacy: 1700 Valley West Drive
  • Hy-Vee Drugstore: 1010 60th Street
  • Hy-Vee Pharmacy: 1725 Jordan Creek Parkway

  • Prescription medications (pills, patches, etc.)
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Pet medications

Note: Most locations do not accept needles (sharps), inhalers, or thermometers. Please check with the pharmacy for their specific rules.
