City of West Des Moines Schedule of Holiday Closures

The following are dates on which city holidays will be observed. City Hall and other city offices and facilities are closed on these holidays. Trash/Recycling Collection Delays are also indicated.

• Labor Day: Monday, September 7 (Trash/Recycling delayed by one day)
• Thanksgiving Holiday: Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 (Trash/Recycling delayed by one day, beginning Thanksgiving Day)
• Christmas Holiday: Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25 (Trash/Recycling delayed by one day, beginning Christmas Day)
• New Year's Holiday: Friday, January 1, 2027
• Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, January 18, 2027
• Memorial Day: Monday, May 31, 2027
• Independence Day: Monday, July 5, 2027
• Labor Day: Monday, September 6, 2027 (Trash/Recycling delayed by one day)
• Thanksgiving Holiday: Thursday, November 25, 2027 and Friday, November 26, 2027 (Trash/Recycling delayed  by one day, beginning Thanksgiving Day)
• Christmas Holiday: Thursday, December 23, 2027 and Friday, December 24, 2027 (Trash/Recycling delayed by one day, beginning Christmas Day)

Holidays that cause a delay by Metro Waste Authority when they fall on a weekday include:

• New Year's Day 
• Memorial Day 
• Independence Day 
• Labor Day 
• Thanksgiving Day
• Christmas Day

When one of the holidays listed above falls on a weekday, there is no collection on that day. Instead, collection shifts by one day for the remainder of the week. For example, when Memorial Day falls on a Monday in May, Monday collection occurs on Tuesday, and collection is delayed for one day the rest of the week, with Friday’s collection occurring on Saturday. If a holiday falls in the middle of the week, such as on a Wednesday, then only collection on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday is delayed that week.

• Thanksgiving Day and Thanksgiving Friday (Nov)
• December 24th and 25th (Christmas).
• December 31st (New Year's Eve Day)

The Library will close at 5:00 pm on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
