Boards & Commissions Overview
The City of West Des Moines provides many ways for residents to use their skills to help our community. By serving on a board or commission, you can provide direct input on the policies that shape our city.
Currently, 11 boards and commissions advise the Mayor and City Council. Most members are appointed by the Mayor with City Council approval. These roles require a significant commitment of time, but they offer a unique way to learn about city processes and help mold the future of West Des Moines.
How to Get Involved

| Bicycle Advisory Commission | Advises the City on implementing the Bicycle Master Plan. Consists of seven members. |
| Board of Adjustment | A 5-member board authorized by State Code to grant special exceptions to the Zoning Ordinance. |
| Civil Service Commission | Ensures efficient public service and protects the interests of City employees. Consists of three members. |
| Human Rights Commission | Promotes education against discrimination in housing, employment, and public services. Consists of seven members. |
| Human Services Advisory Board | Establishes policies to help residents achieve healthy and stable lives. Consists of 12 members. |
| Library Board of Trustees | Supervises library operations, rules, and purchases. Consists of seven members. |
| Parks & Recreation Advisory Board | Recommends park developments, maintenance, and grant applications. Consists of seven members. |
| Plan and Zoning Commission | Reviews development proposals for consistency with community standards. Consists of seven members. |
| Public Arts Advisory Commission | Recommends the selection and installation of public art throughout the city. Consists of seven members. |
| Sister Cities Commission | Promotes cultural and educational exchanges with international partner cities. Consists of seven members. |
| Water Works Board of Trustees | Manages the water utility, including all powers except taxes and bonding. Consists of five members. |
