#SlowDownInTown – Making Our Streets Safer Together

The #SlowDownInTown campaign is a community-wide effort to keep our streets safe for everyone. This program is a partnership between the City of West Des Moines, the West Des Moines Police Department, Willis Automotive, and the West Des Moines Community School District.

It Starts with Us

Did you know that many speeding complaints in West Des Moines are about drivers in our own neighborhoods? We can change this by choosing to ease off the gas. When we slow down, we protect the children, neighbors, and cyclists who make our city a great place to live.

Why It Matters

Speeding in residential areas puts lives at risk. Everyone deserves to feel safe whether they are walking to school, jogging, or riding a bike. When we rush, we miss what makes West Des Moines special, like our beautiful parks and friendly neighbors.

Don’t be in such a hurry that you miss the important stuff.

Know the Law: Hands-Free

As part of our focus on safety, we are reminding drivers about Iowa’s “Hands-Free” law. The rule is simple:

  • No touching your phone while driving.
  • By keeping your eyes on the road and hands off your phone, you help save lives.
