#SlowDownInTown – Let’s Make West Des Moines Roadways Safer, Together
Brought to you by the City of West Des Moines, the West Des Moines Police Department, Willis Automotive, and the West Des Moines Community School District.
It Starts with Us
Did you know that many of the speeding complaints in West Des Moines are about drivers in our own neighborhoods? It’s true — and it’s something we can change, together.
The #SlowDownInTown campaign is a community-wide effort to encourage all drivers to ease off the gas and keep our streets safer for kids, pedestrians, cyclists, and each other. Because when we slow down, we’re not just following the rules — we’re protecting the people who make West Des Moines such a wonderful place to live.
Why It Matters
Speeding in residential areas puts lives at risk. Whether it’s children walking to school, neighbors out for a jog, or someone riding their bike to the park — everyone deserves to feel safe on our streets.
And sometimes, we’re in such a rush we miss what makes our city special:
🌳 Beautiful parks
👋 Friendly faces
🏡 Vibrant neighborhoods
🎉 Local events and celebrations
Don’t be in such a hurry that you miss the important stuff. #SlowDownInTown.
Know the Law: Hands-Free Starting July 1
As part of our focus on safer roads, we’re also reminding drivers about Iowa’s new “Hands-Free” law, effective July 1, 2025. It’s simple:
📵 No more touching your phone while driving.
This law aims to reduce distracted driving and save lives.
By driving at safe speeds and keeping your hands (and eyes) off your phone, you’re helping build a Safe and Welcoming Community for All.
Join Us at These Upcoming Events!
Come out, connect with neighbors, and support the campaign at these community events:
