Tree Maintenance and Brush Removal

We work together with residents to keep our streets safe and our city beautiful. Use the guides below to manage trees and yard waste on your property.

Tree and Shrub Care

The best times to prune your trees and shrubs are Early Spring and Late Fall.

Homeowners are responsible for maintaining any plants on their private property that grow over the public right-of-way (like sidewalks and streets). To keep paths safe:

  • Sidewalks: Branches must be at least 8 feet above the sidewalk.
  • Streets: Branches must be at least 14 feet above the street surface.

Brush and Yard Waste Removal

Yard waste is collected on the same day as your regular trash. Please follow these rules for pickup:

  • Bags: Use "Compost-It" brand bags or any brown paper yard waste bag with a "Compost-It" sticker.
  • Bundles: Wood and brush must be cut into 4-foot lengths and tied with rope or twine.
  • Size/Weight: Bundles should be no more than 18 inches wide and weigh less than 40 lbs.
  • Placement: All items must be placed at the curb.

Bags and stickers are available at most local grocery stores. For questions, visit the Metro Waste Authority website or call them at 515-244-0021.
