Street and Traffic Maintenance

We take pride in keeping West Des Moines roads safe and easy to use. Our core responsibilities include:

  • Road Repairs: Fixing potholes and maintaining the surface of city streets to keep them smooth and safe.

  • Winter Operations: Clearing snow and ice from roads during and after winter storms to help you travel safely.

  • Traffic Controls: Installing and maintaining traffic lights, street signs, and pavement markings (like "sharrows" for bikes).

  • Street Cleaning: Running a regular street sweeping schedule to remove debris from the gutters and prevent drainage issues.

  • Construction Coordination: Providing updates on roadwork and construction projects so you can plan your commute.

  • Rural Care: Specialized maintenance for gravel roads and less-developed areas within city limits.

  • Right-of-Way Management: Overseeing the area next to the street to ensure it is safe and follows city rules.

  • Issue Reporting: Monitoring and responding to non-emergency concerns reported by residents through SeeClickFix.

  • Bicycle symbol with two chevrons above it, painted on a road.

    What is a "Sharrow"?

A sharrow is a symbol painted on the road to show a shared lane for both cars and bicycles. It helps bicyclists know where to ride safely and alerts drivers to expect bike traffic. This keeps everyone moving in a straight, predictable line.
