Solid Waste Collection (Garbage)
Solid waste collection service is available to West Des Moines residents living in single family homes up to and including 4-plex units.
Solid waste collection service is set up through West Des Moines Water Works. Charges for this service are included on your municipal services bill. If you need to start, stop, change your service (size of solid waste cart), or report a damaged solid waste cart please contact West Des Moines Water Works at (515) 222-3460 or visit WDM Waterworks online.
Solid waste should be put out to the curb no earlier than 5:00 PM the day before scheduled pick-up day, and no later than 6:00 AM on the day of collection
Two sizes of garbage carts are available:
96 gallon and 48 gallon

Metro Waste Authority administers the City's residential solid waste disposal.
The current contract hauler for garbage is Waste Connection (WCNX) and may be reached at 265-7374 if there is a problem with pick-up.
SPECIAL COVID-19 NOTICE:
June 2, 2020 Update - Spring Cleanup is rescheduled for the week of July 20 - 24.
May 21, 2020 Update: Curbside Large and Extra Item pick-up service resuming Monday, May 25, 2020.
April 24, 2020 - Effective May 11, 2020, curbside collection of large and extra items is SUSPENDED. Additionally, Spring Clean-up is postponed. In the meantime, Metro Waste Authority facilities are available for residents' disposal needs.Visit www.WhereShouldItGo.com or call 515-244-0021.
On Saturdays residents can take typical household garbage and large items to Metro Waste Authority's drop-off location in Grimes: Metro Northwest Transfer Station, 4100 SE Beisser Dr., Grimes, IA 50111
Have more waste than your cart will hold? West Des Moines residents may place extra boxes or bags of garbage outside of their solid waste cart provided a sticker is attached. These items must have a six foot (6') clearance from your solid waste cart.
Stickers with the Metro Waste Authority (MWA) logo may be purchased from area Hy-Vees.
All items put out for collection should be secured to eliminate the likelihood of litter, with cart lids closed. All garbage in your cart must be in bags.
