Garbage Collection

The City provides garbage collection for residents living in single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, and 4-plex units. This service is set up through West Des Moines Water Works, and charges will appear on your monthly municipal services bill.

Managing Your Service

The Metro Waste Authority (MWA) manages residential garbage disposal for the City. Please contact MWA if you need to start or stop service, change your cart size, or report a damaged cart:

Collection Times: Place your cart at the curb no earlier than 5:00 PM the day before your pickup, and no later than 6:00 AM on collection day.

Large Items and Extra Waste

If you have more garbage than your cart can hold, you can place extra bags or boxes outside the cart if they have an MWA extra trash sticker attached.

  • Placement: Keep extra items at least 6 feet away from your garbage cart.
  • Stickers: Visit the MWA Extra Trash & Large Items page to see how many stickers you need and where to buy them.

Additional Collection Rules

  • Bag Your Trash: All garbage inside your cart must be placed in bags.
  • Secure the Lid: Keep cart lids closed to prevent litter and keep pests out.
