Most police vehicles have tools to help officers unlock vehicle doors. However, we cannot unlock every vehicle. Factors like side air bags or special accessories may make the attempt too risky.

Please note that the driver is responsible for any damage that occurs during the process. When possible, we will do our best to help you get back on the road.

To get your vehicle out of impound, the owner or the operator at the time of the impound must visit the Police Department at 250 Mills Civic Parkway to request a release form.

Important Details:

• Fees: All costs must be paid directly to the towing company. City staff cannot accept payments or make arrangements for you.
• After Hours: During business hours, please visit the lobby. After hours, use the phone at the front entrance to request assistance.
• Private Property: The Police Department may not have records for vehicles impounded by private businesses or individuals.

If you have a concern about our police services or the conduct of a department member, please let us know. We aim to investigate and resolve all concerns within 30 days. If an investigation takes longer, we will update you on our progress.

You can share your feedback in the following ways:

• In Person: Speak with any on-duty employee at the police department. You can also request, fill out, and return a paper complaint form.
• Online: Complete our Online Feedback Form.
• By Phone: Call the Office of Professional Standards directly at 515-440-4792. Please provide the date, time, and type of incident. A supervisor will call you back to gather more details.

Once the investigation is complete, you will receive a response from the Chief of Police or a designated officer regarding the outcome.

• Fee: 15 dollars per card.
• Fingerprint Cards: You must provide your own cards.

During the complaint process, we often meet with you to discuss the incident and understand all perspectives. If video from a body-worn or dash camera is available, it can be helpful to watch it together with the investigator. This allows everyone to reflect on the situation and better understand why certain actions were taken.

If video is not available, we will still work closely with you to review all the circumstances of your concern.

The West Des Moines Police Department has a safe exchange zone in the front parking lot at 250 Mills Civic Parkway. You will see a sign marking this area near the front sidewalk. This zone is under 24-hour video surveillance.

We will notify you about the outcome of the investigation. However, Iowa law prevents us from releasing specific details about employee disciplinary actions or private personnel records.

You must have an appointment to pick up property or evidence. Before you schedule your visit, the officer in charge of your case must authorize the release of your items.
