Citizen Police Academy: The West Des Moines Police Department began a yearly Citizen Police Academy in 2002. The goal of the academy is to provide an educational program that allows citizens to learn first-hand about police operations and achieve a better understanding of law enforcement challenges, functions and opportunities. 

The Citizen Police Academy is provided in the spring and all applicants must be 18 years of age or older, live or work in West Des Moines, have no history of criminal behavior and pass a background check.

RADRAD: The RAD system is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

Our course is taught by certified RAD instructors with simple and effective tactics. RAD provides realistic defense techniques to provide women with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance. To complete the course you must attend each of the four nights of instruction.

The cost of the course is $25.00 which includes free attendance to future programs for defense refresher training.
