Enjoy Riding—Know the Difference Between e-Bikes and e-Motos to Ride Safely and Responsibly
Riding—whether on bicycles, e-Bikes or e-Motos—is a great way to stay active and connected. But with new electric devices becoming more common, knowing what you’re riding and where it’s allowed is essential to keeping everyone safe.
Together with partners from across the community, we are working to help educate parents, kids, and bike enthusiasts to understand the difference between e-Bikes and e-Motos, the regulations that apply to each, and how to ride responsibly—on trails and on city streets.
Do Your Part: Ride Smart.
Understanding the difference helps protect your kids, your neighbors, and yourself.

- Follows State Code!
- Do not have operable pedals. They have electric motors which exceeds 750 watts.
-

- Top speed: Up to 60 mph.
Shared Spaces, Shared Responsibility
West Des Moines trails are designed for everyone—walkers, runners, families, cyclists, and e-Bike riders alike. As more people enjoy these spaces, safety, courtesy, and awareness matter more than ever.
e-Motos are not allowed on city trails and sidewalks. They are designed for roadway use where permitted and MUST be registered and operated by a rider with a permit or license.
Do Your Part: Ride Smart.
It’s a simple message that helps keep trails enjoyable for everyone.
Being Ride Smart means understanding how to ride, walk, and share space in ways that keep everyone comfortable and safe.
e-Bikes on West Des Moines Trails
Electric bicycles (e-Bikes) are a fun and efficient way to enjoy our trail system and are welcome on City of West Des Moines trails when used responsibly.
Being Ride Smart on trails means:
-
Riding at a safe, controlled speed
-
Yielding to pedestrians
-
Passing with care and announcing yourself
-
Staying alert and predictable
-
Knowing the type of electric device you’re riding
If you’re unsure whether your device qualifies as an e-Bike for trail use, your local bike retailer is a great place to start. They can explain the differences between e-Bikes and other electric devices and help ensure you’re riding legally and safely.
Know Before You Ride
Electric devices vary, and not all are permitted everywhere. Rules are based on state codes—not appearances.
Before you ride, know:
-
What type of device you own
-
Where it’s allowed to be used (trail, sidewalk, street)
-
How to ride safely and appropriately
Visit your local bike retailer or explore City and State resources for guidance.
A Community Effort
Safety isn’t about enforcement—it’s about awareness and shared responsibility. When everyone understands the rules and rides smart, West Des Moines remains a welcoming place for people of all ages and abilities.
