Athene Pedestrian Bridge

The Athene Pedestrian Bridge is a major part of the Five Waters Project. Opened in October 2024, this bridge makes it easy to travel between two of our favorite outdoor spaces: Raccoon River Park and Walnut Woods State Park.

This 620-foot steel bridge crosses the Raccoon River, giving walkers and bikers a safe path to explore nature. It connects our local trails to the larger regional trail system.

Bridge Features

  • Easy Access: Connects directly to the Blue Heron Lake trail on the north side.
  • Scenic Overlook: A central area where you can stop to view the river and local wildlife.
  • Room for Everyone: The bridge is 14 feet wide to allow plenty of space for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Project Partners

This bridge was built through a partnership between the City of West Des Moines and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Funding came from community donations, grants, and local sales tax.
