Five Waters Project: More Ways to Explore West Des Moines

The West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department is developing five major projects. Our goal is to give residents new ways to enjoy the outdoors, including paddling, biking, and exploring nature. These projects help protect our local wildlife and land for the future.

1. Jamie Hurd Amphitheater

This is our community’s outdoor cultural center. Located near the neighborhood pond, it offers a large lawn for concerts and space for food trucks. You can also rent this space for private events.

2. Raccoon River Park Boathouse

Explore Blue Heron Lake with a rental boat. We offer canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. The boathouse also has restrooms and extra parking for easy lake access.

3. Marathon Loop

We are building a 26.2-mile trail that connects several major parks, including Valley View and Raccoon River Park. The loop is currently around 75% finished and is perfect for walking, running, or cycling.

4. Raccoon River Greenway

The Greenway provides more access to the river for paddling and future local camping. This project helps protect our trees and wildlife while giving you a new way to discover nature.

5. Pedestrian Bridges & Trail Connections

A new bridge over the Raccoon River connects Raccoon River Park to Walnut Woods State Park. This creates a seamless path for miles of green trails.
