Historic Jordan Cemetery is one of the oldest landmarks in the area. It provides a unique window into the lives of the pioneers who first settled in Polk County.
Pioneer Origins
The cemetery was founded in 1846 by James C. Jordan, a prominent early settler who homesteaded the surrounding land. While it may have begun as a private family plot or a resting place for travelers heading west, it quickly became a vital community space.
The earliest recorded burial occurred in 1855 for Melinda Jordan, the first wife of James C. Jordan. James himself was a significant figure in Iowa's history, serving as both a State Senator and State Representative, and was often described as one of the "leading farmers of interior Iowa."
Community Management
Originally administered by a private cemetery association, the land was officially deeded by Jordan to the association for public use. In 1920, the association requested support from the city—then known as Valley Junction—to help maintain the grounds. Today, the West Des Moines Parks & Recreation Department manages the site to preserve its historical integrity.
