Iowa's First Mini-Forest

The Brookview Park Mini-Forest is a living demonstration of how we can bring the magic of a wild woodland into our urban neighborhoods. Planted in May 2024 by local students and volunteers, this "tiny but mighty" forest serves as a quiet sanctuary for both people and local wildlife.

Why a Mini-Forest?

Traditional forests take decades to grow, but the Miyawaki Method helps nature move a bit faster. By planting native species very close together, we mimic the layers of an ancient forest. This encourages trees to grow upward quickly, creating a lush, green canopy in just a few years.

Woods are Good!

Our mini-forest does more than just look beautiful. It works hard for our environment by:

  • Cooling the Air: Dense leaves provide natural shade and cooling.
  • Filtering Water: Deep roots help prevent flooding and keep our creeks clean.
  • Creating Homes: The forest provides a safe oasis for birds and butterflies.
  • Cleaning the Atmosphere: These fast-growing trees trap more carbon from the air.

Tree-huggers Wanted!

A forest thrives best when it has friends. We invite you to join our community of caretakers to help monitor the site and ensure these saplings reach the sky.
