South 88th Street & Mills Civic Reconstruction   Estimated Start:

Project Overview:  This project is generally described as the South 88th Street and Mills Civic Parkway Reconstruction; ¼ mile, north, south and west and ½ mile east of the intersection.  This project includes approximately 34,700 SY of reinforced Portland cement concrete paving, 7,360 SY of reinforced Portland cement concrete shared-use path, earthwork, 8,000 LF of storm sewer, 1,700 LF of water main, traffic signals, construction survey, surface restoration, traffic control, and other miscellaneous work needed to complete the project.  The project has a one alternate bid to provide 3,800 LF of joint utility trench composed of 12-4” HDPE conduits and associated hand holes.  The award of the project will be determined solely on the base bid total.

All concrete street paving shall be completed and open to traffic by November 15, 2019.  The remainder of the work shall be completed by May 15, 2020. The contractor has reopened 91st Street south of Mills Civic Parkway. The contractor has closed Mills Civic Parkway west of 88th Street and they have closed 88th Street between Mills Civic Parkway to Coachlight Drive. They are installing underground utilities and grading.

 

Project Status:  All concrete street paving shall be completed and open to traffic by July 31, 2020.  The remainder of the work shall be completed by September 15, 2020. 

They are currently paving the remaining sections of South 88th Street, grading and installing traffic signals.

Booneville Road Improvements - S. 88th street to S. 100th street   Estimated Start

Estimated Completion:  10/15/2020

Contractor:  Absolute Concrete

 

Project Overview:  Construct BOONEVILLE ROAD from S 88TH STREET to west of S 100TH STREET including all materials, labor and equipment necessary for installation of approximately: 6,200 LF of storm sewer with 67 structures, 4,800 LF of water main, 113,520 CY of grading, 22,500 SY of PCC pavement, driveways and sidewalk, 24 ACRES of surface restoration, erosion control including 490 TON of riprap and erosion stone, pavement markings, traffic control and miscellaneous related work and appurtenances.

 

Project Status:  Booneville Road west of the Sugar Creek bridge is open to traffic. The segment east of the bridge to South 88th Street is closed as the contractor is in the process of paving the roadway. All remaining work is scheduled to be completed by fall 2020.

33RD/FULLER GRADING AND MODULAR BLOCK RETAINING WALL

Project Overview:  Grading and construction of modular block retaining walls along Fuller Road between S. 35th Street and S. 28th Street in the City of West Des Moines, IA. The existing timber retaining walls will be removed. Project includes sidewalk removal and replacement.

 

Project Status:  The contractor will install sod as soon as conditions allow.

RACCOON RIVER BASIN SEGMENT 5 LIFT STATION/FORCEMAIN   Estimated Start: June 2020

Project Overview:  Construct Raccoon River Basin Segment 5 - Lift Station and Force Main including all labor, material and equipment necessary to construct approximately 356 linear feet of sanitary sewer in open cut 12-inch and 15-inch, 8,759 linear feet of force main - 12-inch in open cut, 410 linear feet of force main - 12-inch trenchless installation, air release valves and pits, 3 pump submersible lift station, pre-manufactured control building, standby power generator, excavation, backfill, manholes, connections to existing sewer, surface restoration, traffic control and miscellaneous associated work, including cleanup. 

 

Project Status: The contractor will be starting in late June installing the force main. They will be installing the lift station later this fall.

GRAND AVENUE RECONSTRUCTION EAST OF 1-35   Estimated Start:  Summer 2020

Project Overview:  Reconstruction of Grand Avenue East of I-35, including all materials, labor and equipment necessary for the project including the approximate quantities: 2234 SY of PCC paving, 1380 CY of excavation and 48 LF of RCP culvert.

 

Project Status: The contractor has completed some minor grading but major activities will start in July. Grand Avenue between South 50th Street and I-35 will be closed in both directions for 30-45 days once this project gets started.

2019 SEWER CLEANING & TELEVISING PROGRAM   Estimated Start:  Spring 2020

Project Overview:  Type A Cleaning and Televising of approximately 60,900 linear feet of six-inch (6") through thirty-six inch (36") diameter sanitary sewer; Type C Root Removal of approximately 2,600 linear feet of six-inch (6") through twenty-four inch (24") diameter sanitary sewer; Cutting of any Protruding Taps; and other miscellaneous associated work.

 

Project Status: The contractor is working at various locations on the project.

Utility Conflicts: MidAmerican Energy gas lines will need to be relocated as part of the project.

 

Project Overview: The construction includes approximately 3900 square yard (SY) of pavement removal, 3600 SY of 7" P.C.C. & 250 Tons of HMA composite pavement, 2850 linear feet (LF) of Curb & Gutter, 4600 SY of subgrade preparation, 4600 SY of granular subbase, 220 SY of driveway pavement, 4 sanitary sewer manhole replacements, 100 LF of 15-inch storm sewer, 25 LF of 18-inch storm sewer, 930 LF of 24-inch storm sewer, 350 LF of 30-inch storm sewer, 70 LF of 36-inch storm sewer, drainage structures, fixture adjustments, miscellaneous grading, sod restoration, survey, traffic control, and other associated work.

 

Project Status: The contractor has installed the storm sewer on Walnut Street and continues working on the subgrade for paving.

Project Overview:  Construction of storm sewer improvements and access roadways including all materials, labor and equipment necessary for the project including the approximate quantities: 6832 SY of PCC paving, 1000 LF of storm sewer pipe, and 278 CY of structural concrete for RCB culvert.

 

Project Status: The contractor will be awarded on June 15, 2020 to the apparent low bidder, Absolute Concrete.

GRAND AVENUE - SOUTH JORDAN CREEK PARKWAY TO SOUTH 88TH STREET   Estimated Start:  Summer 2020

Project Overview:  This construction includes approximately 19,123 SY of 10" P.C.C. pavement with integral curb, 24,789 SY of Modified Subbase, 1,626 linear feet (LF) of water main, 3,291 LF of storm water, 4,545 LF of subdrain, drainage structures, fixture adjustments, 196 LF reinforced concrete box culvert, grading, seeding, survey, traffic control, erosion control, and other associated work.

 

Project Status: The contractor is nearly complete with the roadway paving. Additional work will occur in the South Jordan Creek Parkway/Grand Avenue intersection. The new section of Grand Avenue will open to public traffic in July 2020.

SOUTH 85TH STREET - CASCADE AVENUE TO MILLS CIVIC PARKWAY   Estimated:  Summer 2020

Project Overview:  The project will include construction of South 85th Street from Cascade Avenue to Mills Civic Parkway and the extension of Cascade Avenue from South 85th Street to approximately 250 feet east of South 85th Street at the roadway's existing termini. The construction improvements include approximately 7,740 SY of 7-inch PCC reinforced pavement, 6-inch PCC driveway pavement, storm sewer, water main, subdrain, sidewalk, pavement markings, clearing and grubbing, grading, soil stabilization, traffic control, erosion control, surface restoration, and miscellaneous associated work to complete the project.

 

Project Status: The contractor has paved most of South 85th Street and is currently working on Cascade Avenue. The project should be open to traffic by the end of the summer.

VALLEY JUNCTION PAVERS AND SIDEWALK   Estimated Start:  Summer 2020

Project Overview:  The project is generally described as the removal and replacement of the brick pavers on each side of 5th Street from Railroad Avenue to Walnut Street in Valley Junction. This project includes approximately 2315 SY of concrete pavers, 363 SY of PCC sidewalk, street lighting, signing, site furnishings, landscaping, construction survey, traffic control, and other miscellaneous work needed to complete the project. 

 

Project Status: The contractor is currently working on the east side of 5th Street in the 100 and 200 block.

PCC Mix), 800 SF of PCC Partial depth patching, 17,062 LF of joint preventative sealant, PCC curb and gutter replacement, median repair, intake reconstruction, manhole adjustments, drives, sidewalks, cleaning and re-sealing limestone blocks, re-sealing colored concrete, re-sealing pavers, crack and joint cleaning and filling, traffic control, traffic loops, and other miscellaneous work to complete the project.

 

Project Status: The contractor plans to start in late June.

Project Overview:  This project will resurface various locations in the City of West Des Moines. Types of work including approximately 321 tons of HMA HT 1/2" leveling course, 3,300 tons of HMA interlayer, 1,826 tons of Hi-Pro, 6,600 tons of HMA HT 1/2" surface course, 44,707 SY of surface milling, 37,797 LF of crack cleaning and filling, 3,756 SY of PCC M-4 Mix full depth patching, 553 SY of PCC 5-Hour Mix full depth patching, 1,086 SY of PCC sidewalk, 1,472 LF of PCC curb and gutter, fixture adjustments, pavement markings, traffic control, and miscellaneous work to complete the project.

 

Project Status: The contractor plans to start in late June.

WRA SUGAR CREEK STREAM CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Contractor:  RW Excavating Solutions
Project Overview:  Phase 1 of stream corridor improvement project along Sugar Creek between Stagecoach Dr and Booneville Rd. Project is being managed by Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) in cooperation with the City of West Des Moines and Iowa DNR. Project goals are to improve public safety, improve water quality, and to protect public infrastructure. Work to include tree removals, shaping of stream bank, placement of riprap, grading for future trail, establishment of native vegetation and replanting of trees.

 

Project Status: Contractor has completed tree cutting related to the WRA project. Weather pending, contractor plans to mobilize tree chipping operations and stump removal the week of 4/13. Grading of creek bank to follow tree removal work.

 

The tentative project schedule* includes:

  • March - Contractor mobilization, construction fencing, and removal of trees within grading limits.
  • April - Underground storm sewer adjustments; begin grading and rock placement starting at north end of project.
  • May through August - Complete grading and rock placement along creek channel; seeding of disturbed areas.
  • September - Tree planting and substantial completion.
  • Fall 2020 - Construction of greenway trail (separate project).
  • Spring 2021 - Seeding of native areas.

*Tentative schedule submitted by contractor is subject to change depending on weather conditions and other unforseen situations.

Levee Trail Renovation Project

Contractor:  Des Moines Asphalt & Paving
Project Overview:  Renovation of the existing trail  located adjacent to Lincoln Street between S 1st St and Raccoon River Park. Work will consist of reconstruction of approximately 5100 SY of asphalt trail, realignment of a portion of trail near Raccoon River Park and installation of a new section of trail to accommodate a future trail connection to Valley Junction.  

 

Project Status:  Project is substantially complete and the trail reopened. Remaining punchlist are expected to be completed over the next several weeks. Temporary trail closures may be in place while remaining work is completed.

Project Overview:   Phase 1 of construction for Whisper Point Park located at 9125 Bridgewood Blvd. The project includes overall grading of the park site, installation of site utilities, construction of a restroom facility, 2-5 and 5-12 age playground, concrete sidewalks & trails, water quality improvements and site restoration. Two small shelters and the parking lot will be constructed as part of parkland dedication requirements for area developments, and are not part of this contract.

 

Project Status:   Project is substantially complete and the playground and shelter area are open.  Remaining restroom punchlist items are expected to be completed over the next several weeks.

Project Overview:   Replacement of the neighborhood park signs located throughout the park system.  Many of the current signs are over 20 years old and showing signs of decay and age.  The new signs are designed in the same family as other signs throughout the City, and will be constructed of a combination of corten steel, sandblasted aluminum, and stainless steel lettering, mounted on a concrete base 

 

Project Status:  Project is complete.

Project Overview:   Construction of Pinedale Park located at 3375 Woodland Ave. The project includes demolition of the existing asphalt courts, overall grading of the park site, installation of a small shelter, playground equipment & surfacing, multi-use court, concrete sidewalk connections, stormwater improvements, and site restoration.

RACCOON RIVER PARK BOATHOUSE Estimated Start:   Summer 2019
Estimated Completion:  Spring  2020

Contractor:  Cerebral Group LLC
Project Overview:   Construction of the Raccoon River Park Boathouse located near the main entrance at Raccoon River Park (2400 Grand Avenue). The boathouse will provide improved access and boating opportunities on Blue Heron Lake, and will also provide river trail portage and shuttle service for access points along the Raccoon River.  This facility would house a variety of boat and bike rentals, concession accommodations, patio & lake dock, sitting & viewing areas and restroom facilities.        

 

Project Status: Project is substantially complete. Facility is expected to open in July.

RACCOON RIVER PARK WATER TRAIL PORTAGE

Project Overview:   Construction of a portage access at Raccoon River Park that will enable kayak and canoe access between Raccoon River and Blue Heron Lake. The portage is part of several larger initiatives to improve and provide access to greenway corridors identified in the Greater Des Moines Water Trails Plan and the City's own Five Waters Project. In addition to providing water access, project will also include seating and respite areas and trail signage.

 

Project Status:  Project is substantially complete and open for use.

Project Overview:   Construction of an amphitheater on the City Campus located southeast of City Hall on the campus pond. The project will be broken down into three divisions as follows:

Division 1 – All site grading, utilities, sidewalks, and concrete site walls (not associated with stage).  This work is expected to begin the week of September 23, 2019. 

Division 2 – All work associated with the Amphitheater stage and structure including stage concrete walks, concrete floor, steel structures, metal roofing, stage electrical, and all site lighting.

Division 3 – All work associated with landscaping and irrigation.

 

Project Status: . Contractor currently working on pouring of concrete related items.

HOLIDAY PARK SIGNAGE AND ANCILLARY IMPROVEMENTS Estimated Start:   Fall 2019

Project Overview:   Improvements to the common areas of  baseball and softball complex. The improvements  will include construction of wayfinding signage, a seating area, (2) informational kiosks, and a dumpster enclosure at girls softball.  

 

Project Status:  Project is complete.

2020 COURT IMPROVEMENTS Estimated Start:   Spring 2020
Estimated Completion:  Fall 2020
Contractor:  Gruss Construction
Project Overview:   

The project consists of reconstructing the existing six-court tennis complex at Crossroads Park, full replacement of the basketball and tennis court at Wilson Park and replacement of the basketball court at Meadowview Park. Other associated improvements will include pavement improvements including new sidewalk, trail and parking lot improvements.

 

Project Status:   Last week the contractor completed paving of the base course at Crossroads Park and preparing the rock subbase at Meadowview Park and Wilson Park. This week the contractor anticipates paving the final surface course at Crossroads Park and the base couse at both Meadowview and Wilson Park. Once final surface course is installed, the asphalt pavement will need to cure for 30 days before adding the final colored playing surface. See below for tentative project schedule:

MidAmerican ENERGY COMPANY RECPLEX

Estimated Completion:  January 2021

Project Overview:   The City of West Des Moines built a unique partnership with the private sector to bring a one-of-its-kind sports facility to Central Iowa. This public/private project addresses the need for a regional indoor sports facility that provides year-round access and opportunity for our growing youth sports programs. The complex will feature:

  • Two ice arenas
  • Three indoor soccer fields with synthetic turf
  • Four indoor basketball courts
  • Availability for eight volleyball courts
  • Outdoor soccer fields
  • Locker rooms and amenities
  • 3,000 sq. ft. of multi-purpose community room space
  • Batting cages and many other amenities

Project Status:  Contractors are continuing to install the roof panels over the Fieldhouse with the east side complete and work set to begin on the west side next week.  Masons are currently working on the block work in the commons area on the north side of the building.  Crews are preparing to pour the main drive lanes the week of 6/29 & 7/6 weather depending.
