Raccoon River Park Playground Sensory Wall

Created by Hilde DeBruyne (Cumming, IA)

Raccoon River Park is a favorite destination in West Des Moines. This 232-acre park offers a lake, beach, and several public art pieces like Even Water and Aqua Strata.

In 2022, the City opened a new inclusive playground. This space was designed so that children and families of all abilities can play and learn together in a welcoming environment.

About the Sensory Wall

The centerpiece of the playground is a custom-made sensory wall. It serves as a beautiful focal point for visitors of all ages. The Public Arts Advisory Commission worked closely with the Playground Work Group to make sure this art piece is both fun and inclusive.

This project was made possible with a $75,000 budget, which included a $29,000 grant from BRAVO Greater Des Moines.

Community Collaboration

Creating this wall was a true team effort. The artist, Hilde DeBruyne, partnered with Kunzler Studios’ "The Least of These Foundation" to involve the local autism community.

By listening to their stories and ideas, DeBruyne ensured the artwork truly reflects the people it was built for. Every detail—from the bright blue tiles to the interactive metalwork—was chosen to create a space where everyone feels they belong.
