Volunteers help West Des Moines Human Services run successful programs and events. We value the unique skills and life experiences you bring to our community. We have opportunities in the following areas: Food Pantry, Food Rescue, Clothing Closet, and ELL classes.
If you have a few hours a month, we have a rewarding role for you! We currently need help in our Food Pantry, Clothing Closet and Food Rescue.
Hours and Requirements
- Shifts: Monday – Friday, between 8:30 am to 3:00 pm (most shifts are in 2-hour increments)
- Evening Hours: Tuesdays, 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
- Age: You must be at least 14 years old.
- Process: All volunteers must complete an application, release form, and a background check.
- Commitment: We offer regular weekly shifts (2–3 hours) or intermittent flexible options.
Opportunity Types
Core & Intermittent Volunteers
We are in need of volunteers on weekdays and on Tuesday evenings. For the Food Pantry and Clothing Closet, we ask for a regular weekly commitment (core volunteer) or a commitment to help on an ongoing, as-needed basis (intermittent volunteer). We do not offer one-time shifts in these areas. To get started, please complete a volunteer application and a release form.
Students (High School & College)
- High School: Students age 14+ can earn Silver Cord hours on Tuesday evenings in the Clothing Closet. You can also help off-site by making birthday kits for our Birthday Heroes Program. Note, we do not currently offer on-site opportunities for students age 13 or under.
- College: Opportunities are available in the Food Pantry and Clothing Closet. A background check is required.
- Forms: Please complete a student volunteer form and a release form. Students under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign their release form.
Corporate Volunteering (VTO)
If your employer offers Volunteer Time Off (VTO), we welcome your assistance with our seasonal events (listed below). Please complete a VTO application and a release form. Please email HSvolunteer@wdm.iowa.gov for more information.

Note: We no longer accommodate court-ordered community service. Please visit the United Way of Central Iowa to find agencies that do.
