Filing a Discrimination Complaint

On December 14, 1998, the West Des Moines City Council passed the Human Rights Ordinance. This protects citizens from discrimination based on age, color, creed, disability, gender identity, national origin, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation.

Because of our size and location, discrimination complaints for Des Moines and West Des Moines are handled by the same agency. If you believe you have been discriminated against in credit, education, employment, housing, or public accommodations, please contact the Iowa Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) to file a formal complaint.

Important Information to Consider

Before filing, please keep the following in mind:

  • Scope: The ICRC investigates individual complaints involving violations of the "Iowa Civil Rights Act of 1965."
  • Protected Areas: The Act covers discrimination in credit, education, employment, housing, or public accommodations.
  • Deadline: You must file your complaint within 300 days of the alleged discriminatory practice.
  • The Process: Filing a complaint is the first step. The ICRC acts as a neutral, objective law enforcement agency.
  • Assistance: Help is available for both parties. You can contact the ICRC for help obtaining or filling out forms.
