Mission Statement

West Des Moines Human Rights Commission influences and advocates for community and government systems to ensure a welcoming and thriving community.

About the Commission

The West Des Moines Human Rights Commission has seven members. These members are West Des Moines residents appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council to serve three-year terms.

We also include a youth member (ex-officio) who serves a one-year term to ensure younger voices are heard in our community.

Commission Meetings

The Human Rights Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m at West Des Moines Human Services (139 6th Street, West Des Moines). We welcome the public to attend and share their thoughts during the public comment period at the start of every meeting.

Our History and Purpose

The West Des Moines City Council created the Human Rights Commission in 1998. Our mission is to promote equality and protect the dignity of everyone in our community. We work to:

  • Stop discriminatory practices.
  • Protect individual rights and safety.
  • Ensure the well-being of all residents.
