Recent changes in state law now permit the use of fireworks on July 3, 4, and December 31. However, it's important to understand that this law does not authorize the use of fireworks on City-owned property. As stated in State Code Sec. 727.2, individuals are only permitted to discharge fireworks on property they own or with the explicit permission of the property owner. Therefore, the use of fireworks in City parks or other City-owned locations remains prohibited. Violators may be issued a simple misdemeanor citation under state law, which will be prosecuted by the Polk County Attorney's Office.
Fireworks are legal to sell and purchase in West Des Moines. On April 21, 2022, the State of Iowa passed a law allowing the sale of consumer fireworks in cities. For information on the sale of consumer fireworks, click here.
Help us reduce fires and injuries and leave the fireworks to trained professionals. There will be a fireworks display held at the City Hall campus on July 4 at 9:45pm.
