Understanding Your Property Taxes

Your total property tax rate is made up of several smaller taxes controlled by different local authorities. Because these authorities operate independently, your exact tax rate depends on where your property is located in West Des Moines.

The City of West Des Moines spans four counties and six school districts, which results in nine different total tax rates across the city.

Who Sets Your Tax Rates?

The following authorities determine the different parts of your tax bill:

Local Taxing Authorities by Category
Category Taxing Authorities
City & Schools City of West Des Moines and School Districts (Des Moines, Norwalk, Van Meter, Waukee, West Des Moines, or Winterset)
Counties Dallas, Madison, Polk, or Warren County
Health & Education DMACC (Community College) and County Hospitals (Broadlawns, Dallas County, or Madison County)
Regional & State DART (Transit), County Assessor, County Ag Extension, and the State of Iowa
