West Des Moines EMS offers American Heart Association (AHA) CPR courses taught by professional paramedics. Our instructors are AHA-certified, and completion cards are valid for two years.
Location: All classes and testing are held at our training center: 318 5th Street, West Des Moines, unless otherwise arranged.
Which Course Do You Need?
The course you choose depends on your employer or licensing requirements. Please confirm which one you need before registering.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): For healthcare providers (EMS, nurses, dental staff) and students entering medical programs. Covers CPR/AED for all ages and choking management.
- Heartsaver CPR/AED: For non-medical professionals like coaches, childcare providers, and foster parents. This may include First Aid if required.
- Family and Friends CPR: A two-hour, non-certified class for anyone (ages 10+) who wants to learn basic skills in a relaxed environment. Ideal for parents and neighborhood groups.

Online "Blended Learning" Option
You can complete the classroom portion online and then visit our center for the hands-on skills test.
- Visit ShopCPR and select your course (BLS or Heartsaver).
- Complete the online module and save your certificate.
- Email your certificate to Julie.Powell@wdm.iowa.gov to schedule your in-person skills test.
