From our beginnings as a railroad switchyard to our status as a premier destination to live and work, West Des Moines has a rich history of progress and community vision.

1893 — The Beginning

Valley Junction

Incorporated on October 9, 1893, our city began as a railroad hub with just 500 residents. Early leaders were forward-thinking, quickly installing "progressive" services like telephone lines, gas mains, and electricity.

1905 — Early Landmarks

The First City Hall

Our first dedicated City Hall was built at 137 5th Street for just $900. This humble building served the community well, housing both city offices and the first Fire Department.

1938 — A New Identity

Becoming West Des Moines

To move away from the declining railroad industry and embrace a suburban future, the city officially changed its name. Soon after, in 1943, the West Des Moines Public Library was founded.

Modern Era — Growth

A Hub of Commerce

Strategically located at the crossroads of I-35 and I-80, West Des Moines has grown into one of Iowa's fastest-growing cities—a premier destination for both families and businesses.

1993 - 2002

Flood & Rebuilding

After the floods of 1993 damaged the old 5th Street offices, City Hall moved temporarily until the current municipal building opened at 4200 Mills Civic Parkway in 2002.
