West Des Moines Police have continued their investigation into the July 4 shooting. Their work has produced an arrest. Byrone Sanchez-Zermeno (18) of Des Moines was taken into custody without incident on Sunday evening. He has been charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon. He was taken to the Polk County Jail.

Additionally, West Des Moines detectives have seized two handguns and two rifles.

West Des Moines Police typically do not name juveniles involved in criminal investigations. At the family’s request, we are identifying the decedent as Teonnie Tillman (17) of Ankeny.

West Des Moines Police have received support from the Iowa Department of Corrections, Fusion Center, West Des Moines Fire, Des Moines Police Department, the Suburban Emergency Response Team (SERT), and the Polk County Attorney’s Office.

This investigation is still open.

Any person arrested is presumed innocent unless guilt is assessed in a court of law.
