On July 4, 2026, around 10:35 PM the West Des Moines Police Department received a report of a shooting in the 1100 block of 20^th Place. Officers responded and found a large party. They also found a person under the age of 18 who had an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency personnel performed life saving measures at the scene and transported the patient to a hospital in Des Moines. That person did not survive their injury.

Police have continued their investigation throughout the night. Preliminary information tells them there was a party in the area. A verbal argument broke out between attendees and ended in a handgun being fired. The crowd dispersed as officers arrived.

This investigation by West Des Moines Police Patrol, Detectives and Crime Scene Unit remains open. West Des Moines Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.
