The West Des Moines City Council certified the results of the 2025 Special Partial Census during a special meeting held December 30, 2025, at 12:30 p.m., officially recognizing the city's continued growth and unlocking additional state funding for infrastructure.
The U.S. Census Bureau certified the population in the designated census tracts and blocks as 18,066 residents and 9,257 housing units, reflecting a net increase of 5,236 residents (7.6%) over the 2020 Census figures for those areas. This brings the city's estimated total population to 73,959, up from 68,723 in 2020 – a testament to West Des Moines' vibrant economic development and appeal as a premier community in Iowa.
The certification paves the way for the state to update population-based distributions, including an estimated $727,804 increase in Road Use Tax revenue for 2026 alone, totaling approximately $3,714,942 through 2030 based on projected per capita rates. The city invested $405,345 upfront in estimated costs for the census, with the U.S. Census Bureau required to provide final accounting within 120 calendar days.
"This certification marks another milestone in West Des Moines' remarkable growth story," said Mayor Trimble. "These funds will directly support our roads, bridges, and vital infrastructure to keep pace with our expanding community."
The certified results have been submitted to the Iowa Secretary of State for state approval and distribution to relevant agencies, including the Iowa Department of Revenue and Treasurer of State.
