West Des Moines Police seized a handgun at Valley High School Tuesday afternoon. Around 2:12 PM the School Resource Officer (SRO), who was on site at the school, was notified of potential vaping in one of the school’s restrooms. The SRO, working with school administrators, located the students involved and found one of them to have a handgun. Both students were removed from the school. One was taken to Juvenile Court Intake on an unrelated matter.

Officials say there was no violence or threat of violence. No one was injured. The firearm was seized. Police cite their cooperative relationship with West Des Moines Community Schools as central to successfully, safely, and swiftly responding to this concern. Police say their investigation remains open.
