West Des Moines Police have charged Ascher Urquhart-McDonald with making a threat of terrorism. Police say they began their investigation on July 3, 2025, during the West Des Moines’ Independence Day Parade. Around 7:04 PM, a male called Westcom Dispatch. He threatened to “plow into” the parade and officers helping with traffic control. As part of their investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Urquhart-McDonald who was later arrested without incident.

Officials confirmed no acts violence occurred during the celebration. “Safety is at the front of the line when we are planning these large events,” said Sergeant Dan Wade. “We look at the logistics of previous events here in West Des Moines. We also look at lessons learned from other events across the country.”

He described a cooperative approach between city departments which helps these events be successful. “Police officers might be the most visible piece but Parks and Recreation, Fire, EMS, Public Services all weigh in on planning. They all work during the event. All these disciplines combine to make a smooth experience for the community,” he says.

Officials say planning for next year’s Independence Day celebration is already underway.
