City of WDM Network/Server issues

Post Date:12/13/2019 1:47 PM
On December 9, the City of West Des Moines experienced network and server issues believed to be caused by a malicious attempt to disrupt City government operations.

Staff immediately shut down the network and contacted computer forensic investigators and cyber security experts to investigate exactly what happened and restore normal operations. We also notified our cyber insurance carrier, local law enforcement officials and the F.B.I.

It’s important for the public to know that the City has work-arounds and contingency plans in place to handle network and server disruptions.

Public safety services (Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services and Westcom 911 dispatch) are operating and stand ready to provide assistance as usual to anyone who needs them.

City Hall and City offices also are open and conducting business although email may not be working consistently for all city staff or elected officials.

Since this is an ongoing investigation, we’re unable to provide additional information at this time because we don’t want to negatively impact efforts to restore our systems.
