Parks and Recreation Department Response to COVID-19

At this time, City of West Des Moines parks, trails and greenways are open to the public. Our highest priority is the health, safety and well-being of our visitors, as well as staff who operate and maintain West Des Moines parks, trails and greenways. During this unprecedented time, we have coordinated efforts with other surrounding communities to remain diligent in taking proactive steps to ensure these public spaces are as safe and enjoyable as possible. However, we highly recommend that all individual users of these facilities follow the CDC guidelines and state recommendations pertaining to COVID-19.

·  According to State of Iowa recommendations, limit your group to less than 10 people when visiting a park, trail or greenway.

·  If you have been sick in the last two weeks, please stay at home for your health and the safety of others.

·  Avoid popular areas where people may congregate, and also avoid larger groups in general. Areas to avoid may include the dog park, playgrounds, shelters, etc.

·  Please maintain distance between you and other park visitors according to guidelines and recommendations by health officials. Please take into consideration the health of others when spending time outdoors.

·  Pack extra soap or hand sanitizer. Please be aware that due to night time temps below freezing, permanent park restrooms are closed seasonally every year through April 15. Due to increased use of portable toilets, hand sanitizer may not be available.

·  Additional information on best practices for keeping you and your family safe can be found online at the CDC website.

An annual show of incredible native wild flowers makes Southwoods Park one of the most unique parks in West Des Moines. The wooded hilly landscape that dominates the 40 acre natural preserve provides the best hiking in the city. In 1999, the Rothchild Memorial Nature Trail opened inviting park users to discover some of the scenic undeveloped land that follows Jordan Creek on its way to the Raccoon River. A natural waterfall is one of the many features of this walk. A 9-hole disc golf course is a popular feature of this beautiful park. Many disc golf players say it is the best course in the metro area!
