Public CPR Program


The City of West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services is proud to offer CPR courses. Our CPR courses are taught according to the standards of the American Heart Association (AHA). Course instructors are certified by the AHA. Course completion cards are distributed at the time of the class or mailed within 30 days after course completion.

Currently we offer the programs described below on a regular schedule. All classes are held at West Des Moines Public Safety Facility #19. PSF #19 is located at 8055 Mills Civic Parkway, in West Des Moines (west of Jordan Creek Pkwy on Mills Civic pkwy) unless otherwise noted. Call the CPR Coordinator at 515-273-0768 or email cpr@wdm.iowa.gov to register for classes.

Healthcare Provider Initial/Renewal

The Healthcare Provider course is meant for persons who provide healthcare as part of their job responsibilities. In the purest sense, healthcare providers work for emergency medical services, hospitals, medical clinics, etc., but a childcare worker or employee in any business who is required to provide emergency care may be deemed a healthcare provider in his or her employment setting.


This course provides learners with group interaction and feedback from an instructor while learning skills.

For employees and/or designated first responders who have a duty to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

Family & Friends CPR


The Family & Friends CPR program contains information on how to perform the basic skills of CPR in adults, children, and infants and how to help an adult, child, or infant who is choking.


This classroom-based, video, and instructor-led CPR course offers families, friends, and community members the opportunity to learn basic CPR in a dynamic group environment.


Audience:


The Family & Friends CPR program is for family members, friends and members of the general community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. This program is specifically designed for those who prefer to learn in a group environment with feedback from an instructor.

This program also can be a non-credentialed option for teaching CPR to middle and high school aged students in school settings. This program can be used in a variety of creative ways to teach lifesaving CPR skills to communities.

Bloodborne Pathogens/Universal Precautions


This Bloodborne Pathogens/Universal Precautions Course is a classroom course that teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials.


This course is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction.


Audience:


This course is designed for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as:


Correctional Officers


Childcare workers

Security guards


Maintenance workers


School personnel


Hotel housekeepers

Health and fitness club staff

Tattoo artists


CPR Anytime for Family and Friends Kit

CPR Anytime for Family and Friends is a new, self-directed learning program that makes it easy to learn CPR techniques at home in less than 30 minutes. With an easy-to-follow practice demonstration DVD, families and small groups can quickly, and conveniently, learn the core skills of CPR—and learn to save lives.


As a way to reach out to our community and train more people than ever before, West Des Moines EMS offers this to individuals who may not normally take a full CPR course and have no need for a CPR Certification.

Class Scheduling:


Participants may register for classes by calling the CPR Coordinator at 515-273-0768 or emailing cpr@wdm.iowa.gov. Payment must be made at the time of registration. Payment will not be accepted on the day of the class.


Groups or businesses who wish to schedule a class separate from those offered on the regular calendar can contact the CPR Coordinator to make arrangements. Group discounts are not given.

Training Center: Classes have a minimum requirement of 6 participants. Courses not meeting this requirement will be rescheduled at no additional cost and participants will be notified two days prior to the course.


Participants: Refunds will not be given if participant does not show up on the course date.
The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials; do not represent income to the Association.

Participant may elect to schedule a "One on One" class with an instructor. One on One classes are intended to assist participants in obtaining course completion when the regularly scheduled classes do not meet the participant’s availability. A One on One class may be scheduled with the CPR Coordinator based on the availability needs of the participant, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
