The Importance of Sidewalks

Sidewalks are an integral part of the transportation system for the City of West Des Moines, allowing walking and jogging that is safely separated from vehicular traffic. City Council has responded to the importance placed on quality sidewalks by our residents by initiating a City Sidewalk Program.

The City Sidewalk Program

The sidewalk program provides a means of reviewing the condition of existing sidewalks and the need for new sidewalks throughout the City. This is an annual program, with a different area of the City scheduled for inspection every year. The areas and dates affected are shown on this map:

The scheduled area is reviewed by staff and notices of any defects found are sent to the property owner of record according to the County Auditor's office. The City encourages residents to repair deficiencies on their own. If repairs are not completed by the property owner, the City initiates a special assessment program. This gives the City the authority to make repairs and bill the costs to the property owner through their property taxes.  For more information, select these documents:

When a new sidewalk is required, the property owner has the right to request a deferral of installation:

The City of West Des Moines continues the sidewalk program in an effort to provide safe public walkways.   As citizens of West Des Moines it is our responsibility to help maintain our City. This is an area that each property owner can assist with by taking proactive steps to maintain their sidewalks.

The elected officials and staff thank you for your cooperation in our efforts to make West Des Moines an even better place to live and work.
