SW 60th Street Phase 1    Estimated Start:  Spring 2019

Project Overview:  The project will include construction of 3 segments of urban PCC street and associated work. The first segment will be the regrading and construction of a portion of the existing SW 60th Street alignment north of Cumming Road. The second segment will be the regrading and construction of a portion of the existing 110th Lane alignment between the aforementioned SW 60th Street alignment and a new proposed realignment of SW 60th Street. The third segment will be the grading and construction of a realignment portion of SW 60th Street between the previously mentioned 110th Lane and the proposed construction of the Veterans Parkway extension. Construction activities will include installation of storm sewer, installation of water main, grading, installation of urban PCC paving, installation of longitudinal sub drain, surface restoration and all other related work. 

 

Project Status:  All three segments of the project are open to general traffic. Sidewalk and restoration will be completed in Spring 2020.

2019 PCC Patching Program   Estimated Start:  Spring 2019

Project Overview:  Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) Patching at various locations including approximately 1,816 SY of reinforced 7” PCC full depth patching, 723 SY of reinforced 8” PCC full depth patching, 5,430 SY of reinforced 9” PCC full depth patching, 58 SY of reinforced 7” PCC full depth patching (IA DOT 5 Hr. PCC Mix), 167 SY of reinforced 8” PCC full depth patching (IA DOT 5 Hr. PCC Mix), 192 SY of reinforced 9” PCC full depth patching (IA DOT 5 Hr. PCC Mix), 100 SY of reinforced 10” PCC full depth patching  (IA DOT 5 Hr. PCC Mix), 46 SY of reinforced 14” PCC full depth patching (IA DOT 5 Hr. PCC Mix), 100 SF of PCC Partial depth patching, 13,941 LF of joint preventative sealant, PCC curb and gutter replacement, median repair, intake reconstruction, manhole adjustments, drives, sidewalks, traffic control, traffic loops, and other miscellaneous work to complete the project.

 

Project Status: The contractor has completed the work for 2019 and will resume in the spring of 2020 as weather allows.

South 88th Street & Mills Civic Reconstruction   Estimated Start:  Spring 2019

Estimated Completion:  Fall 2020

Project Overview:  This project is generally described as the South 88th Street and Mills Civic Parkway Reconstruction; ¼ mile, north, south and west and ½ mile east of the intersection.  This project includes approximately 34,700 SY of reinforced Portland cement concrete paving, 7,360 SY of reinforced Portland cement concrete shared-use path, earthwork, 8,000 LF of storm sewer, 1,700 LF of water main, traffic signals, construction survey, surface restoration, traffic control, and other miscellaneous work needed to complete the project.  The project has a one alternate bid to provide 3,800 LF of joint utility trench composed of 12-4” HDPE conduits and associated hand holes.  The award of the project will be determined solely on the base bid total.

All concrete street paving shall be completed and open to traffic by November 15, 2019.  The remainder of the work shall be completed by May 15, 2020. The contractor has reopened 91st Street south of Mills Civic Parkway. The contractor has closed Mills Civic Parkway west of 88th Street and they have closed 88th Street between Mills Civic Parkway to Coachlight Drive. They are installing underground utilities and grading.

 

Project Status:  The contractor plans to open the segments of new pavement west of the cemetery on Mills Civic Parkway and north of the cemetery on 88th Street by December 13th. This will conclude the road work for 2019. Private utility work will continue through the winter as conditions allow. Work on the remaining sections of the road will resume as weather allows in the Spring of 2020 and should be completed by Fall 2020.

Booneville Road Improvements - S. 88th street to S. 100th street   Estimated Start:  Spring 2019

Estimated Completion:  Fall 2019

Contractor:  Absolute Concrete

 

Project Overview:  Construct BOONEVILLE ROAD from S 88TH STREET to west of S 100TH STREET including all materials, labor and equipment necessary for installation of approximately: 6,200 LF of storm sewer with 67 structures, 4,800 LF of water main, 113,520 CY of grading, 22,500 SY of PCC pavement, driveways and sidewalk, 24 ACRES of surface restoration, erosion control including 490 TON of riprap and erosion stone, pavement markings, traffic control and miscellaneous related work and appurtenances.

 

Project Status:  The section of road west of the Sugar Creek bridge is open to traffic. The segment east of the bridge to South 88th Street will remain closed for the winter.

33rd/Fuller Grading and Modular Block Retaining Wall   Estimated Start:  August 2019

Estimated Completion:  Spring 2020

Contractor:  Alliance Construction

 

Project Overview:  Grading and construction of modular block retaining walls along Fuller Road between S. 35th Street and S. 28th Street in the City of West Des Moines, IA. The existing timber retaining walls will be removed. Project includes sidewalk removal and replacement.

 

Project Status:  The retaining walls were damaged during the backfilling operations. In order to repair the walls satisfactorily the contractors decided to completely disassemble and reconstruct both the lower and upper sections. The wall work should be completed by December 7th. The remaining work shall be completed as weather allows but is likely to carry over to the Spring of 2020 for final completion. Weather has adversely impacted the project his fall working on the slopes and the damaged wall have extended the completion into next Spring. There has been ongoing coordination with the impacted property owners and landscape installations prior to black dirt respread and sodding.

Levee Trail Renovation Project

Contractor:  Des Moines Asphalt & Paving
Project Overview:  Renovation of the existing trail  located adjacent to Lincoln Street between S 1st St and Raccoon River Park. Work will consist of reconstruction of approximately 5100 SY of asphalt trail, realignment of a portion of trail near Raccoon River Park and installation of a new section of trail to accommodate a future trail connection to Valley Junction.  

 

Project Status: Contractor completed grading and majority of concrete paving this week including realignment of trail near Raccoon River Park and new trail connection near S. 11th St. Next week contractor will complete concrete paving and associated grading. Trail is expected to be re-opened by mid-week. In the spring, contractor will return to complete renovation of the asphalt portion of the project.

KIWANIS PARK SHELTER REPLACEMENT Estimated Start:   Spring 2019

Project Overview:   Replacement of 20 year old wood gazebo with new hexagon metal shelter structure.  The project includes removal & disposal of shelter, removal of surrounding concrete & shrubs, supply & installation of a new shelter, new sidewalk paving, and site restoration.

 

Project Status: Project is substantially complete. Remaining punch items to be completed in Fall.

HIDDEN POINT PARK IMPROVEMENTS Estimated Start:   Spring 2019

Project Overview:   Phase 1 of construction for Hidden Point Park located at 1250 S Hidden Point Ct.  The project includes overall grading of the park site, installation of the site utilities for future shelter & restroom, installation of concrete parking lot, trails and sidewalks, installation of a separate 2-5 age and 5-12 age playgrounds, and final site restoration.

 

Project Status:   Playground equipment has been installed on both 2-5 age and 5-12 playgrounds. Remaining items including installation of playground safety surfacing and general site cleanup are scheduled to completed over next several weeks.

WHISPER POINT PARK IMPROVEMENTS

Project Overview:   Phase 1 of construction for Whisper Point Park located at 9125 Bridgewood Blvd. The project includes overall grading of the park site, installation of site utilities, construction of a restroom facility, 2-5 and 5-12 age playground, concrete sidewalks & trails, water quality improvements and site restoration. Two small shelters and the parking lot will be constructed as part of parkland dedication requirements for area developments, and are not part of this contract.

 

Project Status:  Contractor has completed mass grading operations, site utilities and paving of the shelter area. Currently contractor working on installation of the restroom building. Remaining items including installation of playground equipment and shelters scheduled to be completed in November.

NEIGHBORHOOD PARK ENTRY SIGNAGE Estimated Start:   Summer 2019

Project Overview:   Replacement of the neighborhood park signs located throughout the park system.  Many of the current signs are over 20 years old and showing signs of decay and age.  The new signs are designed in the same family as other signs throughout the City, and will be constructed of a combination of corten steel, sandblasted aluminum, and stainless steel lettering, mounted on a concrete base 

 

Project Status:  All signs have been installed. Site restoration scheduled to be completed over next several weeks.

Project Overview:   Construction of Pinedale Park located at 3375 Woodland Ave. The project includes demolition of the existing asphalt courts, overall grading of the park site, installation of a small shelter, playground equipment & surfacing, multi-use court, concrete sidewalk connections, stormwater improvements, and site restoration.         

 

Project Status:  Playground equipment and shelter have been installed. Remaining items including playground safety surfacing and general site cleanup scheduled to be completed by end of November.

RACCOON RIVER PARK BOATHOUSE Estimated Start:   Summer 2019
Estimated Completion:  Spring  2020
Contractor:  Cerebral Group LLC
Project Overview:   Construction of the Raccoon River Park Boathouse located near the main entrance at Raccoon River Park (2400 Grand Avenue). The boathouse will provide improved access and boating opportunities on Blue Heron Lake, and will also provide river trail portage and shuttle service for access points along the Raccoon River.  This facility would house a variety of boat and bike rentals, concession accommodations, patio & lake dock, sitting & viewing areas and restroom facilities.        

 

Project Status:  Utility and mass grading has been completed. Contractor currently completing foundation work associated with boathouse building.

RACCOON RIVER PARK WATER TRAIL PORTAGE

Estimated Completion:  Summer 2020
Contractor:  City of West Des Moines
Project Overview:   Construction of a portage access at Raccoon River Park that will enable kayak and canoe access between Raccoon River and Blue Heron Lake. The portage is part of several larger initiatives to improve and provide access to greenway corridors identified in the Greater Des Moines Water Trails Plan and the City's own Five Waters Project. In addition to providing water access, project will also include seating and respite areas and trail signage.

 

Project Status:  Access on the lake side has been final graded and restored. Pending permit approval, improvements on the river side of portage anticipated to be completed by Summer 2020

JAMIE HURD AMPHITHEATER

Project Overview:   Construction of an amphitheater on the City Campus located southeast of City Hall on the campus pond. The project will be broken down into three divisions as follows:

Division 1 – All site grading, utilities, sidewalks, and concrete site walls (not associated with stage).  This work is expected to begin the week of September 23, 2019. 

Division 2 – All work associated with the Amphitheater stage and structure including stage concrete walks, concrete floor, steel structures, metal roofing, stage electrical, and all site lighting.

Division 3 – All work associated with landscaping and irrigation.

 

Project Status:  Demo, mass grading, and major utility work has been completed. Contractor currently working on pouring of foundation.  Please note a portion of the loop trail around the pond is expected to be closed during construction.

HOLIDAY PARK SIGNAGE AND ANCILLARY IMPROVEMENTS Estimated Start:   Fall 2019

Project Overview:   Improvements to the common areas of  baseball and softball complex. The improvements  will include construction of wayfinding signage, a seating area, (2) informational kiosks, and a dumpster enclosure at girls softball.  

 

Project Status:  Contractor currently working on installation of footings associated with the improvements. Once concrete work is complete, masonry work will begin.
