The Importance of SidewalksSidewalks are an integral part of the transportation system for the City of West Des Moines, allowing walking and jogging that is safely separated from vehicular traffic. City Council has responded to the importance placed on quality sidewalks by our residents by initiating a City Sidewalk Program. |
The City Sidewalk Program
The sidewalk program provides a means of reviewing the condition of existing sidewalks and the need for new sidewalks throughout the City. This is an annual program, with a different area of the City scheduled for inspection every year. The areas and dates affected are shown on this map:
Sidewalk Improvement Location Schedule |
The scheduled area is reviewed by staff and notices of any defects found are sent to the property owner of record according to the County Assessor's office. The City encourages residents to repair deficiencies on their own. If repairs are not completed by the property owner within the time specified in the notice, the City will have the sidewalk repaired and invoice the property owner. If, after 30 days, the invoice is not paid the amount owed will be certified to the County Treasurer as a special assessment against the property. For more information, select these documents:
