Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS):The purpose of TIPS is to help people create the kind of environment that promotes safety and responsibility wherever alcohol is sold, served, or consumed. TIPS is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving.
The West Des Moines Police Department provides training in two of the six programs offered through TIPS. These two programs are:
- TIPS for On Premise - a five-hour session for restaurants, hotels, bars, and nightclubs with provide alcohol in open containers.
- TIPS for Off Premise - a three-and-a-half-hour session for grocery, convenience, and liquor stores which provide alcohol in sealed or closed containers.
The fee for either of the training programs is $20.00.
The Police Department provides training at the West Des Moines Law Enforcement Center on a quarterly basis and can be located on the community calendar. Iowa Crime Free Multi-Housing Program: This program is designed to help tenants, owners, and managers of rental property keep drugs and other illegal activity off their property.
The program is solution-oriented and designed to be easy, yet very effective in reducing the incidence of crime on rental property. The program utilizes a three part approach which ensures the crime prevention goal while maintaining an approach which is very tenant friendly.
Retail Theft Group Program: This collaboration is between metro-wide law enforcement agencies and business owners and employees to identify theft offenders and share preventative theft information. The group meets once a month at the West Des Moines Police Department but shares information more frequently by other communication means. Training and Emergency Management: The Training and Emergency Management Unit (TEMU) of the West Des Moines Police Department is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating training programs to meet the mission of the department. The unit is responsible for developing and implementing community based training for both the public and private sector in the area of emergency management and homeland security. The unit is also responsible for reviewing, updating, and creating department emergency response plans to align with the City of West Des Moines emergency response plans.
The Training and Emergency Management Unit is now comprised of two sworn officers. With the addition of the second officer the unit has significantly expanded its efforts in homeland security and emergency management training.
