A candidate profile is equivalent to an on-line employment application that can be used to apply for a job posting.
Why do I need to create a profile?
In order to apply for any job postings, you must first create a candidate profile. A link to create a candidate profile can be found in the Job Posting section under Employment. You will need to complete the following screens to create a profile:
1) My Personal Information
2) My Address and Phone Number
3) My Work History
4) My Education History
5) My Qualifications
6) My References
7) My Attachments
8) EEO/AA Information
For additional information or to view screen shots, refer to the Instructional Sheet.
When I create a Candidate Profile, do I still need to apply for a position?
Yes, in order to be considered for a specific position, you will need to click on Apply to this Posting. Creating a candidate profile saves your personal information in the system, but DOES NOT submit your on-line application to job postings.
How do I apply for a position?
You can only apply for a position, AFTER you have created a candidate profile.
You can view a list of the open positions in the Job Posting section under Employment. By clicking on the position, you will be able to view a job profile (or description) of this position. If you are interested in applying for the position after reviewing the job profile, click on Apply to this Posting at the bottom of the page.
You can apply for more than one position at a time, but you must click individually on each job that you are interested in.
If there are not any jobs listed under the Job Postings section, the City currently does not have any open positions.
What is an assessment?
An assessment is a defined evaluation tool that is used to determine if a candidate meets the qualifications of the job. Each assessment is job specific.
You will receive notification that you will need to complete this assessment via e-mail and a pop up confirmation that you will receive after you apply to a posting. You are required to complete this assessment by the deadline in order to be considered further for the position that you have applied for.
If I create a profile, will it be on file indefinitely?
Candidate profiles will be considered inactive 3 years after the record was initially created.
You will receive an e-mail notifying you that your profile will be deleted if you do NOT renew your profile. You can renew your profile by clicking on Maintain My Profile Status and then Please Renew My Profile.
How do I update my profile?
It is recommended that you review and make changes to your profile on a regular basis to make sure that the City has your most current information.
Once you have logged in you can select the category under My Profile that you need to update. Just click on the menu option, update the appropriate information, and click on the save icon at the top right hand of the screen.
Who do I contact if I have problems?
You can contact Human Resources from 8:00 – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday at 515-222-3616.
Can I apply for a position that is not yet posted on the website?
Applications are only accepted for open recruitments, so you can not apply for a position unless it is listed under the Job Posting section.
How do I know what positions are available?
All positions that the City of West Des Moines is accepting applications for will be listed under the View Open Postings section of your home page once you have created a profile.
You can also view job postings on the City of West Des Moines website at www.wdm-ia.com by clicking on Job Postings in the Employment section.
Will I hear from the City once I have applied for a position?
Once you have applied for a position, you will receive an instant confirmation on the screen.
The City of West Des Moines will notify you of the status of your application after all application materials have been reviewed. Because of the volume of the applications that the City receives, this can take up to one month after the job posting has expired.
What do I do if I don't have my candidate code?
Once you create a user profile, your candidate code (also called candidate #) will be displayed on the first screen in which you are to establish your password.
Please make a note of your candidate code, and keep your e-mail confirmation that you will receive after establishing your login.
If you have lost or forgotten your candidate code, please contact Human Resources at 515-222-3616.
What do I need to do if I have to logout before I have finished my candidate profile?
If you are not able to finish your candidate profile after logging in, you can complete the information at a later time.
After you have logged back into the system select the category under My Profile that you need to update. Just click on the menu option, update the appropriate information, and click on the save icon at the top right hand of the screen. You will need to click on the Home button to get back to the home page to select the other categories under My Profile to update.
How do I reset my password?
Click on Change My Candidate Password under the My Profile Section. You will be required to enter your old password and your new password. Once you have completed this information, click on the save icon at the top right hand of the screen.
I have clicked on the link to create a profile, and nothing happened. All I got was a blue screen?
In order to download the link, your computer must have Internet Explorer 7 (or a higher version), Chrome, or Firefox. Your browser also must be set to accept cookies.
Where can I apply if I do not have access to a computer?
If you do not have access to a computer but would like to apply for a posting, you can visit the Human Resources Department or the West Des Moines Library, during normal business hours, where computers are available for public use.
