WDM Shade Crusade residential tree sale on Sat., April 27

Post Date:04/02/2019 11:15 AM

The City of West Des Moines is once again making close to 500 high quality native trees available for purchase during a residential tree sale for West Des Moines residents. Each tree has a value of $60 - $120, but residents will pay only $30 per tree with the balance covered by the City. Each household will be limited to two trees that must be planted on residential property within the West Des Moines City limits.

Forestry Supervisor John Olds said this offer, called the "WDM Shade Crusade,” allows residents to purchase trees online by visiting the City’s website at www.wdm.iowa.gov/ShadeCrusade.

Species available include Swamp White Oak, Serviceberry, Redbud, Red Oak, Quaking Aspen, Hackberry, Chinkapin Oak, Bald Cypress, American Hornbeam and American Elm.

Residents need to select the tree(s) they would like on the City’s website before April 27. The sooner residents sign up, the better their chances are of getting their tree of choice. Trees must be picked up on Saturday, April 27, from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., at the City Hall parking lot at 4200 Mills Civic Parkway. Tree planting and care demonstrations will be held every 30 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m.

“In the next few years, we’ll see the devastation caused by the emerald ash borer, so it’s important to reestablish our urban tree canopy,” Olds said. “Trees give us oxygen and fight pollution, they prevent erosion, provide shelter for wildlife and they help us conserve energy with the shade they provide.” Without trees, life on earth would be difficult if not impossible to sustain.

“Foresters always like to say that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the next best time is today,” he said.

Residents with questions about the program, or the types of trees that are available for purchase, may contact John Olds at 222-3417 or email him at john.olds@wdm.iowa.gov.
