West Des Moines takes immediate steps to lower property taxes

Post Date:03/13/2019 9:03 AM
The West Des Moines City Council held a special meeting this morning and approved lowering the City’s property tax rate from $11.79 to $10.99 per $1,000 of valuation thanks to the passage of the local option sales and services tax (LOSST) in Polk County on March 5th.

This reduction, when coupled with the reduction from $12.00 to $11.79 per $1,000 of valuation from the West Des Moines/Dallas County sales tax election in 2017, reduces the City property tax rate by a total of 8.4 percent.

“We are simply keeping our promise to the citizens of West Des Moines. After the one cent increase goes into effect on July 1, the City budget will be amended to continue with the plan presented to voters,” explained City Manager Tom Hadden. “This plan includes the hiring of seven police officers and five firefighters to serve our growing community and improvements to our library, parks system and public infrastructure.”

Hadden said the City’s website at www.wdm.iowa.gov will keep residents up to date on how the City is spending sales tax revenue.
