Last chance to meet the grazing goats at Southwoods Park!
West Des Moines Parks and Recreation staff and Tammy and Deb of Get Your Goat Overgrowth Specialists will be available on Sunday, June 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Southwoods Park (350 South 35th Street) to let everyone see the grazing goats in action one last time.
The goats just recently left Southwoods after completing their work, but several will return on Sunday for this special event.
For the last few weeks, the goats have been munching on invasive species, and they have done an excellent job of removing poison ivy, buckthorn, garlic mustard, honeysuckle and multiflora rose from the park. These invasive species take over and shade out native species that grow on the ground, so when the goats graze away, they inhibit their growth and give native species a fighting chance at survival.
In addition to learning about each goat and how they love to eat, staff will be selling CHEW CREW T-shirts on Sunday for only $10. The shirts are available in Youth XS, S, M and L. Adult shirts are available in S, M, L and XL. After the event, shirts may be purchased at the Parks and Recreation office in City Hall or at the Raccoon River Park Nature Lodge, 2500 Grand Avenue, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The City of West Des Moines purchased the services of the goats from Get Your Goat Overgrowth Specialists, which is located in Ventura, Iowa.
If it rains, the event will be canceled.
