Hwy 28 just south of Grand Avenue to close on April 2

Post Date:03/26/2018 10:34 AM
The City of West Des Moines will be closing a section of Iowa Hwy 28 just south of Grand Avenue beginning on Monday, April 2, at 9 a.m., in order to begin building a pump station that will help prevent flooding that often occurs in the area. This section of Hwy 28 is also known as 1st Street on the west side in West Des Moines and 63rd Street on the east side in Des Moines.

The flood control project will involve building a pump station that will collect and pump storm water from drainage ways into Walnut Creek. This will prevent water from making its way into neighborhoods and businesses along the west side of First Street/63rd Street and Grand Avenue.

The pump station will be constructed just north of the Dollar General building on the east side of Hwy 28, and the work will include a large cast-in-place box culvert that will be built from the pump station building to Grand Avenue west of Hwy 28 in West Des Moines. The box culvert will be located south of Dollar Tree and will extend north toward Grand Avenue near the old Sully’s location.

The box culvert construction under Hwy 28 will require the road to be closed to all traffic during April and May. Crews will reopen Hwy 28 as soon as possible and work will continue through the remainder of 2018 using lane closures that will allow traffic in both directions.

Synergy Contracting will be performing the work for the City. Foth is the engineering design firm that will provide on-site inspection of the contractor’s work.
