The City of West Des Moines will host the 2017 Solheim Cup at Des Moines Golf and Country Club from Aug. 14 – 20, 2017. This Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) event is expected to attract more than 175,000 spectators over a seven-day period.

West Des Moines Interim Police Chief Jim Barrett said the Police Department will be making changes to traffic patterns to ensure everyone’s safety. Signs will be posted and officers will direct traffic to multiple routes that may change as conditions warrant. Local police and traffic officials from surrounding cities are urging everyone in the metro to plan travel routes in advance and be prepared for delays, especially during peak travel times.

“We want everyone to be aware that during the Solheim Cup, the City will close Jordan Creek Parkway from University Avenue to Lake Drive for the entire week,” he said. “This is a major street closing so you’ll need to plan ahead and find alternate ways to reach your destination.”

Barrett said barricades will be placed at the intersections at University Avenue and Lake Drive. Vehicles headed north on Jordan Creek Parkway will be required to turn right onto Lake Drive, which will be a one-way eastbound road.

Expect heavy traffic (especially during the morning on Friday, August 18)

The Junior Solheim Cup, practice rounds and other events will take place Monday through Thursday. Barrett said officials expect that Friday morning will be the most challenging as people drive to work and huge numbers of spectators attend the first day of the Solheim Cup. Heavy traffic also is expected after 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday after music concerts end and everyone leaves the golf course.

“Our top priority is to ensure everyone makes it to their destination safely, including commuters and residents who travel our streets every day,” he said. “We’ve been working with the Iowa DOT, the Iowa State Patrol and other public safety and traffic officials from around the metro to prepare for this, so as long as people are patient and flexible, traffic will keep moving and everyone will get where they need to go.”

Traffic from I-80

Traffic coming from I-80 will be required to turn right onto Lake Drive. Vehicles not traveling to the golf course are encouraged to use the 50th and 60th Street exits or the Grand Prairie Parkway exit to access University Avenue.

Only cars with credentials will be allowed into Des Moines Golf and Country Club at the intersection of Jordan Creek Parkway and Westown Parkway. University Avenue will be open for the entire week, and cars will be allowed to turn south onto 71st, 68th and 60th Streets. All businesses and locations east of the golf course will be accessible to the public.

West of the golf course (Click here for map)

All streets on the west side of the golf course will remain open to residents, and officers at the barricades will allow everyone access to their homes at all times. Parking on the street will not be allowed from an area south of University Ave. to north of Nine Iron Drive west of the golf course and east of 92nd St.

Volunteer and VIP parking will be located on the west side of the golf course off 88th Street. Most spectator parking will be behind the Marsh building in Urbandale at 12421 Meredith Drive. Residents can expect heavy bus traffic (beginning at 4:30 a.m.) on University Avenue and on streets east of 98th Street as buses transport attendees from Urbandale to the west side of the golf course.

Traffic on I-80, I-35 and I-235 to Off-site Parking ‘Lot P’ (123rd and Meredith Drive, Urbandale)

It is important that everyone driving from the interstate to the off-site parking at 123rd and Meredith Dr. in Urbandale take the appropriate exit Wednesday through Sunday. The Iowa Department of Transportation will use electronic message boards to direct you to the appropriate exit, depending on what direction you are coming from (see attached directions). Once you take the appropriate exit, the Solheim Cup will have static directional signs to the off-site parking. During this event, a number of officers and troopers will be directing traffic. It is important that drivers watch out for them and follow their direction.
